Dancing for Health

“Having Parkinson’s can make my body freeze and I feel like I have concrete boots on” says Cathy “but since coming to Dancing for Health Classes I haven’t froze. My GP has said he has noticed a vast difference and improvement and my joints aren’t as stiff.” Cathy attends the Wednesday afternoon class in St Andrew’s Church Hall led by professional Dancing for Health instructor, Tracey Barnes, Director of Dancing for Health CIC. Having begun with offering dance for Parkinson’s sufferers, from September Tracey is opening the classes up to people suffering from other conditions such as stroke and cancer, and to elderly people with mobility problems. All participants have been amazed at how dance tailored to suit their conditions has restored mobility and renewed their self-confidence. Cheryl and John say “The classes have put some fun back into our lives, The dance instructors are very professional, patient and understanding of Parkinson’s sufferers needs.”

The two hour sessions are divided into two parts, with refreshments in between. In the first half, Tracey offers seated dance. Christine explains: “the variety of arm movements you are able to do to the music allows you to achieve flexibility that has not been felt for a long time”. Hazel also likes the seated dance and says the class gives her the motivation to go out and meet people. The second half is for partner dance which Tracey says is particularly helpful for Parkinson’s sufferers. Volunteers are on hand to support participants without their own partners.

Dancing for Health Classes are held every Wednesday from 1.30 – 3.30pm. Refreshments are served half way through the class, giving participants a chance to rest and chat. There is a small charge of £4. Contact Tracey Barnes on 07721 046757 for more information or come along on any Wednesday afternoon.

  1. Good afternoon, my name is Sian Beresford, I’m the activities coordinator over at Whittington care home in old Whittington – and I was wondering do you by any chance travel to homes? As we’re a 48 bed nursing home, and I’m currently looking for a session of exercise for the residents, would this be something we could discuss?
